How’s That

A passionate story of love, loyalty, rivalry, betrayal and triumph with cricket as the backdrop. Vishal is a lower – middle class boy – the third in a large family where his father works in a mill and mother as a domestic. Vikramaditya Sinh comes from a privileged background – he’s the elder son of an erstwhile ‘rana’, Royal blood courses through his veins. Vishal plays “gully cricket” clandestinely, since his parents disapprove strongly (“Don’t waste time playing” – study, study, study).

Vikram is a public school product. They encounter each other during Vikram’s summer holidays at the Shivaji Park Maidan.  Both love cricket.

Vishal’s “guru” is an old, sickly, alcoholic cricket, who was once India’s opening batsman and is now broke and ailing. He spots Vishal’s genius and decides to groom him personally.

Meanwhile Vikram’s talent flowers with the best of coaches, bats, pads and other paraphernalia. His parents are proud of him and encourages the boy even though their marriage is strained.

A young girl – Swati, who follows the game keenly, befriends both the boys.

The two guys clash on the field repeatedly. Develop a rivalry that is healthy yet fierce.

They play league matches together. Each has his own individual style.  A great deal is expected from both of them.

They meet each other’s families, Vishal is insulted by the princelings mother.

Both woo the girl who chooses to become a sports journalist in a leading paper. Their cricketing career blooms.  Girl interviews both guys – Each one feels she has favoured the other.

A Pakistani actress falls in love with Vishal – who doesn’t respond. She tries and makes it to all the venues to watch Vishal play.

Princeling woos Swati flamboyantly, but she shows exemplary integrity in her coverage.

On the eve of crucial match – Princeling’s parents announce their divorce.  He is shattered.  It is the deciding match for the India Eleven selection.  His morale is broken.  Vishal comforts him.  So does Swati.

Both guys make it to the team. The finals are to be played in Australia. (Melbourne).

The Final as it turns out is to be played against Pakistan. The actress is torn between her country and Vishal.

Princeling wants to opt out because of turmoil at home. Vishal persuades him to not give up at this stage and play for the honour of his country.

Vishal’s father fall sick. Requires money.  Princeling offers to pay all the bills – but Vishal refuses.  His family refuses too.  (they have’nt forgotten the insult).

Climax occurs at Melbourne. Vishal & Vikram start receiving threatening phone calls asking them to withdraw from the match.  Both are nervous.

Huge sums of money are offered to them next to throw the match. Swati gets to hear about it.

Both boys are wooed by Pepsi / Coke types with crores as endorsement money. They’ve made it to the big time on their own steam.

But who will win the “Man of the Match” trophy. The rivalry continues so do the mysterious threats.

Paki actress finds out the identity of the man. She informs Swati, who decides to sort it out on her own without disturbing the concentration of the two Star players.  A lot is at stake.  The tension is palpable.

The killer is about to strike (he’s a sharp shooter) at a point in the match that can turn it – Both boys are at the crease. He could get either one of them with ease.  The Pakistani team is determined to get both wickets.

Both girls set out to locate the killer and deflect his bullets (They’ve received a tip – off).

Who will score the century ? Will the bullet find its target.  Will the match be abandoned.

The killer strikes.  The Paki actress is hit.  The match ends.  India has won.  The boys know nothing.  Swati rushes actress to hospital.  The boys hold afloat the trophy while Paki actress battles for her life.  Climax to be worked out.
